When painting double-sided sign blanks, I have always driven three paneling nails or push pins in one side of the blank. I place them in the areas that will be sandblasted away. But, the leave a little hole after blasting. So, I decided to try something different.

After applying three coats of water based acrylic to one side, letting it dry for about eight hours, I flipped it over to spray the other side. I layed it on a soft cloth covered with WAX PAPER thinking that the paint wouldn't stick to this. Well, it didn't stick but evidently some of the wax transfered to the surface.

Does anyone know how to remove this wax off the paint without hurting the paint? I tried alcohol.

How do you paint double sided signs?

You're sure it wont hurt the latex?

I have a whole gallon of it at the shop.
I'll try it tomorrow.

You can bet I'll never do that again.
Why wouldn't a scrap of low tack sandblast resist work to rest the painted side on? Think I'll experiment with that next.

Too be honest, Wayne. I have no idea if it'll work. I was sorta expecting Roger to pop in wearing that pink shirt of his.

I can only suggest testing a small spot and see how it goes.

Wax is pariffin based, so varsol should remove it quite easily without hurting the Acrylic Latex paint. Flood it once, and wipe with a clean cloth. Repeat a second time to get any remaining wax. Two passes should eliminate all wax.

I haven't tried it yet.
Si, I don't have any 28 grit belts but will a 36 work? I have some of those.

Ken, where do you get varsol? Is that a chemical or brand name?

Haven't tried anything yet. I put it on the back burner waiting for word from Mr. Williams(Sherwin). One Sherwin Williams dude told me he THOUGHT, MAYBE mineral spirits MIGHT work. According to correspondence via e-mail with the Sherwin Williams "Paint Guy", "ammoniated cleaners" are the thing to use. Now, my question: what, specifically, constitutes an "ammoniated cleaner"? Pure ammonia? tub and tile cleaner? fermented urine?

Still haven't heard from Rapid Roger either.
Wadaya say Rodger? I've got a gallon of RapidPrep. Works wonders on vehicles.

I need to know exactly what to use so that next time I'm dumb enough to goof up a $900 sign with wax paper, I'll be an expert.

if its only wax your trying to remove...set sign so that the face with the wax on it is facing down to the ground....and get a hair dryer and heat the wax...it should melt off and either go into the air or will melt and drop off the paint...sorta like the "lost wax" thing you do for making jewelry...

Well, I tried the "ammoniated cleaner" recommended by the Sherwin Williams "paint Guy". I bought some ammonia and mixed it according to directions (i/2 cup to a gallon water). I applied this solution and scrubbed it with a cloth. When I rinsed it off throughly with the waterhose, water still beaded off the spots. So, I poured straight ammonia on the blame thing. Same result. There was nothing left to do but try the mineral spirits. I scrubbed it with the MS, rinsed it with the hose, washed it with detergent and thoroughly rinsed it. No more beading, so, must be no more wax.

I rinsed it again this morning for good measure, let it dry, scuffed it with 220 paper, and sprayed another coat of DTM acrylic.

I didn't doubt you guys that the mineral spirits wouldn't work. But, I just wasn't sure how it would react with the latex paint.
Evidently, the Sherwin Williams "paint guy" didn't know HIS stuff.

Cost me some time and effort but, like my Granny used to say: "bought wit is best wit"
