I am hand carving a Christmas tree topper for our sherriff. It is 6" in diameter not really worth getting the paint gun dirty. My question is if I use a spray can enamel primer and top coat will there be any adhesion and gloss problems?

No.

Repeating what Ray said. I went to a SignFoam seminar long time ago and they said any paint or stain sticks to HDU. You just have to get the dust off. Your project would be easy to wash it in a laundry tub with a soft scrub brush. Priming isn't even necessary. The only thing priming does is make the texture of the HDU smoother as you build layers and sand.

How we get the dust off is to spray the HDU down with a water hose with one of those pressure nozzles attached. You can see the dust being washed away. Since the HDU has a closed cell structure, it cannot absorb the water.

Raymond, how long do you wait to paint after you wash it ? I assume you dry it with a towel ?

I spray mine too, and always let it dry overnight. But I suppose one could put it in front of a fan for awhile if they're in a hurry. I just like to err on the side of caution.

I spray it off good with water...it dries really fast...remember it does not absorb water...it's waterproof.

Since I live in Texas and the weather is warm and dry, it usually doesn't take more than a few hours. We speed it up a little by blowing off the excess water with our air compressor.
I've found that Corafoam from Duna, USA produces less dust than the other brands, but all are easily cleaned with water.

A somewhat side note:
As Raymond noted, Corafoam from Duna produces less dust then the other brands.
I switched to Duna about 5 years ago and have not looked back. My favorite HDU by far.
