It's been many years since I've lettered a fabric awning. This is one that Hand lettering it might be out of the question. Last time I did one with a mask I think there was a mask made for that purpose and after laying it on we coated it with a clear and then followed with color. Seems some on this site said they used high performance vinyl for a mask and possibly some type of acrylic or latex paint. What's best in today's world? Thanks for the read and assistance.

I've tried different methods and don't really like any of them, too time consuming.

If I ever need to letter an awning again I may try this method I saw. Cutout 1/4" thick PVC letters glued to the fabric. It has a nice, dimensional look and may not really be any more work. The one I saw had pins thru the fabric with some kind of washer or fastener on the back.

Rick, I letter several awnings a month and have decided Glenn Taylor's method works best for me. Cut the design in intermediate vinyl, weed, and apply transfer tape. Position in place on the awning with duct tape and after removing backing paper, spray with 3M Super 77 glue (mask around graphic so you don't overspray) Let it set up for a minute and stick it down. When peeling the transfer tape, do it in 6 inch strips to decrease the "pull" on the vinyl. Smooth out any loose spots and then paint a bleed coat of the background color - this prevents your letter color from bleeding under the vinyl. Then follow with 2 coats of the letter color. Latex exterior house paint works fine on Sunbrella and most awning material. I use Shureline pad brushes to apply the paint - seems to work better than brushes or rollers.
Call me if you have any questions. Hello to the family......
