I have a problem, don't know how to figure it out.. but it seems like I can't open files, the ones that are a few months old, on Corel anymore, they were always fine, I can open files that were done the last month. I just tried opening a file in January and it comes up saying the "File is not supported" I an skip ahead to March and everything is fine, but then April I can't open... any thoughts? I do have most if all backed up.... By the way I have 3 computers and it's the same with all 3.

Hmmmm....that's odd, unless you're trying to open a newer file in an older version of Corel.
Do you get the same message if you try to import the file into a new page?
Happening on three computers at the same time also seems strange. Are all of the files shared from a server?

Yes Tony they are all on one computer, and when I try to open it says the same, can't import either...?? Thanks!

Just a wild thought...Can you try changing the file extension from .CDR to .CMX??? Then try importing the file as a Corel Presentation Exchange.?
OR have you tried specifying only CDR in the import file type box?

Have you tried opening one of your backed-up files?
If it helps, I'd be happy to try one of the offending files to see if it opens without any errors.
I have x3 and x6.
email address is in my signature.

Thanks Again
Neil

Sorry Neil, the file won't open or import into x3 or x6.....I get an "unsupported file type" message.
Posted by Tony McDonald (Member # 1158) on :
Did a little searching for the problem, and didn't really find any answers.
might do more harm than good ?

Thats what I thought, same message comes up here on all 3 of the computers...Thanks for trying Tony.

Down loaded a couple of versions... did nothing...probably just Junk....Hmmmm

Just another really silly idea Neil...
You didn't happen to download a trial version of CorelDraw X7 ? And it somehow upgraded old files up to X7 status???
Like I said....just a silly wild thought.
(I did that a few versions ago, opened a couple of files and the trial version, at that time, saved them to the new version when I closed the files. Ended up buying the new version anyway, so no problem in the end)

No I don't think so Dave.. I tell you what, I'm not sure what happened really, I was on Holidays, and when I came back the 2 designers that we have here said it just happened out of no where, funny how when I go on holidays stuff always "Happen" I did have a computer guy come here and check for viruses and stuff, but he can't explain it, everything else is fine.

Maybe I should try a higher version of 4? would that work? Does anyone have any latest versions I could send a file to?
Posted by Neil D. Butler (Member # 661) on :
Opps Tony already said he tried 6...
Posted by Tony McDonald (Member # 1158) on :
Yes...I got the same error message in 3 & 6
Tried opening the file, and importing the file. Changed the file type to cmx...same thing.

No go. The latest version of Illustrator actually has a file choice when opening a file of Corel Draw 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, & 10. It wouldn't open and gave me the message that it was an unknown format. I read on line that the corresponding version of Illustrator would open Corel files so I thought it was worth a try. I'm beginning to think that your files got corrupted somehow. Sorry.

Not sure if I'm wat off base here but I recently purchased Corel PDF Fusion...a little program that allows you (or is supposed to allow you) to open a wide range of files. It cost about $30. It's possible your files might open with and then can be converted to a 'friendly' version or alternative extension. I don't know...Dave know way more about Corel than I do!

The Guy who uses this computer must have been doing something.. I don't know, it's funny all the same. all the files in the months of Jan, Feb March, were corrupt, April was fine, then it went on to corrupt June, skip July and then August... weird, we had most of these months backed up, but not all as he was suppose to do on an external Hard drive... Thanks for all the help!

Sorry it happened Neil...
BUT????
Have you learned a lesson????
Don't let ANYONE mess with YOUR stuff!!
I have friends and neighbours who trust me to "fix" their computers when they do something silly. But I always ask and tell them what do they absolutely need or want to preserve first. Then I go to work...
Would I allow anyone to work on my computer and possibly screw things up??? NO WAY!!!!
I am the only person who has access to my computer/computers.

Dave, I have 3 work stations, this guy has been with me for over 15 years, he is the only one who uses this computer for work here at the shop, he is one of my designers besides myself and another guy who has also been here for over 10 years, he has his own work station... the part I'm upset about is that things were not backed up like they were suppose to be. They have 2 external hard drives, it's an easy thing to do, back up everyday or at least once a week. Thanks for your Help.

You hit the nail on the head Neil. I had over 4,000 3D relief files simply disappear off my computer one day after a 1 second power disruption. I only noticed the lights flicker, but then the folder with all the reliefs was empty, nowhere to be found anywhere on the hard drive. Back up, back up, back up!
Posted by Neil D. Butler (Member # 661) on :
Yes Yes and Yes.. I'm not saying that the designer did anything to cause the problem he just wasn't Vigilant in Backing up...
