Some time ago there was a posting here which gave the recipe for a solution to spray or brush on wood to age it to a grey colour.... anyone remember who posted it or has such a recipe???

I use white vinegar that has had some steel wool soaking in it. Paint or spray on and sun dry. Sand and repeat if needed. =)

Yep, that trick works great. Let the steel wool soak in the white vinegar overnight, then brush or spray it on. It works best with Cedar though.

We used to mix a dry powder we got from landscape supply places in water and apply with Hudson sprayer. I think it was iron sulphate.

I have used "lifetime Wood Treatment" available from Home hardware...works well and you do not have to worry about finger prints spray it on and let dry...the more water that hits it the better.
Might be just a fancy name for the iron2sulphate though.

if you got a pottery supply near you.......its a plethora of chemicals. they use them for glaze's on pottery. you can buy iron oxide powder, mix in water, makes a rust color....try rubbing it on wood.....like a stain......

If you coat the wood with a solution of strong tea and let dry before using the white vinegar/steel wool solution you will get much better results! The vinegar/steel wool solution reacts with the tannin in the wood, the tea adds more tannin!
