I took some footage of my grandson today and would like to do a little editing on it. Is there any shareware that will perform the basics for me until I get a bit farther down the learning curve?

nice link OP- like the article said- Windows movie maker for pc, imovie for mac will do most of the basic stuff, relatively easy learning curve- I have used and taught these as well a few other bigger programs like Final Cut, Premiere, etc. my favorite is Sony Vegas, but it has a steeper learning curve than the basics.

Movie Maker is fine if you import your clips to the timeline in the order you want them to end up- it gets a little trickier and harder to work with if you decide to move stuff around once they are on the actual timeline- it can be done, just not as easily as others. It also has some limited transitions and effects that will make it look nice.
