This is a design I came up with for a local repair shop...two sided sign
The plan is to make this out of MDO and add the oval on each side for some dimension. I'll have to mirror the cartoon because of the wrench jutting up, but that got me thinking about a couple of other options. Which do you nice folks think would be better...
A: Carve the whole cartoon out of HDU? or B: Do the cartoon in paint and just add the wrench as a separate carved piece of HDU to make it look more like it's coming away from the car?

The budget would determine if you can do this as a full blast 3D sign. If the cartoon becomes 3D (which I think would be really cool!) I would also layer the R & M complete with a chrome trim around it. Perhaps some stick on automotive chrome trim might work here. The 'AUTOMOTIVE' should also be prismatic in 3D. may as well make it real checker plate as well... This would make a cool sign worth selling... fun too!

I agree - a dimensional cartoon would be cool.
One thing I really don't care for is the graphic gray shapes behind the oval. I don't think it meshes well with the sign shape and other elements.
Not a fan of the R&M font for this either...the lines of text look pretty 'scrunched.' I'd ditch those gray graphic shapes...and air the text out a bit, then I think you've got it. Love your car-toons. My 2¢

Ray, the design looks great to me, the only thing I would change is the lower case m alongside the upper case R. They should both be upper case, that is the way this old guy would do it. Bill

Very cool design Ray. But after reading the suggestions from everyone I took a closer look at everything. I think the phone number is kind of just there which I know you have to include it. How about making it blue with white numbers? You have a blue ring around the cartoon and a royal blue outline around automotive. I would go brighter blue for a little more pop like a process blue. The white phone number will need a thin black outline on the blue background.
I agree with Todd about the gray/silver graphic at the top. Maybe use two blues or blue and silver together.
If the budget allows, 3D as much as possible. I love your wrench idea sticking out. I can see this sign being about 4" thick so it can hang with eye bolts.
Let us see what the final sign looks like when you are finished. Again, very cool work.

Well, the customer just emailed me and asked to have the R and M like the word automotive.
I tried the 2 blues, Steve, in the stripes on top but thought it overpowered the oval and cartoon. I do like the phone number better with the blues and white as I tend to downplay them in most designs.

Just got the approval for design 2...with one change. Gonna roll back the R&M to solid red.
Car will be 3D.
Downside of using a real wrench is the scale. It would be a pretty heavy wrench and attaching it might be tricky. I think some aluminum guilding and clear coat might give it a more realistic look without losing the "cartoony" feel.

This will be a great looking sign from 20 feet. but without any negative space, it may be difficult to read from a distance. KISS
