Our Norton subscription is up in about a month. What is a good anti virus? I don't mind paying....Norton certainly wasn't free. I need a fire wall too.

My local computer shop guy uses and recommends Trend Micro Internet Security. It's worked good for me so far. It works for all XP and Vista 32 /64 bit, IE 6 & 7 and Firefox. $47.50 was my price.

hey George, I got all that protection from the free AVG. I think the only problem ya gonna have is wiping Norton out of your computer.

We really like AVG. It has saved our computers on several occasions.

Avira. . . .think it's the same as AVG

Another vote for AVG here too!!
It is the only Anti-virus that has been installed on our laptops. On my desktop, I had to remove Norton completely first before installing AVG and if I remember correctly I went to Norton's website and used their own uninstaller to do it completely and correctly.

I've had great success using Kaspersky. I have a few friends who work for the Geek Squad (for what that's worth) and that is the only one they use on their personal computers.

Been using AVG for 8 years.... been really happy with it. Google 'AVG Free' for the download page. Make sure you are installing the FREE version and not the trial for the paid version.
Also, don't install the AVG toolbar and disable the 'Send Info Home' option. That will keep things working a little faster.
And is it a laptop? Do you take it to a lot of WiFi hotspots? If so, you probably need a software firewall. You could also turn on the Windows Firewall if you like and with the right tweaks get pretty good performance from it...
If it's a desktop computer and you have broadband internet, the router you are using will have a firewall built in... in that case, a software firewall is not necessary most of the time.

I used AVG for years, but it is a resource hog. I now have ESET, which came highly recommended from some serious geeks I know......

Kaspersky here too... I really like it. It was recommended by Best Buy over the other ones they sold. I actually got it to get rid of AVG, which I really didn't like. Personal preference I guess - but so far Kaspersky has worked great and not seemed to affect computer performance.
