We are doing some research on ADA signs. Primarily, the cost of the equipment to manufacture them vs. buying them wholesale from another sign shop. If anyone has done research on this themselves and may have some suggestions, it would be very helpful.

it probably depends on how many you think you'll be doing. i looked into it, and it seems that for about $12K I can get everything to do a variety of that kind of work, up to 12" x 24" (which allows for cutting of small acrylic letters, too, not just ADA signs).
I'm a 1-guy shop, and I don't think I can do the work faster than I can pay others for it. I just finished a job that was raster Braille and cut letters applied to acrylic. I supplied the acrylic pieces and I got the finished pieces back for $20 each. I'm not sure I could have done them at 5 per hour -- not once i figure in the set-up time etc. (my hourly rate is $100/hour). That price included the cost of the Romark plastic for the applied letters and the cost of the Braille beads. If I had the space to keep the stuff set up all the time, or if I did these 3 days a week, then it would pay. But its a sideline for me, and I can do just as well by marking up somebody else's work.
