Well I got my new computer set up....with Vista... and all my software works, even the stuff they said that they didn't support. I'm cutting directly from Corel X3 on both my PNC 1100 and my CX24. Quickbooks 2002 is working just fine so far. I have the new desktop networked with both the old and my laptop and they communicate great. The system seems very stable...two weeks with no crashes or hangups and I am LOVING my 3Gig RAM!!!!!!! The only thing that is even a little slow is the feed to the plotters...but I suspect that is in the translation between the serial to USB. The ten second lag is well worth the tradeoff in the increased speed of drawing. So here you go...the first official pro Vista post! Yes the security takes a little effort to work around, but it sure doesn't seem to be the nightmare I was warned of.

I agree Kelly, I don't run vista on my shop computers, but have it on my laptop and have had zero problems to date. Yes, the security takes some time to setup while installing all your programs, but once it is done.......Smooth sailing

I'm just getting ready to get a new computer with Vista and have been told Photoshop 6 won't work on it. Should I wait to upgrade Photoshop? I like 6 OK. Also I have Gerber Omega 2.0. They tell me I'll need 2.6. I don't want to upgrade if I don't need to since I don't do signs full time anymore. Anyone have answers? Thanks

Yeah, Kelly. But you're gonna have big problems. Your designs are going to suck, it's going to lock up daily, internet will be slow, you won't be able to get email anymore, have viruses out the kazoo, and probably develop a bad case of pimples... you just wait.
Shoulda gone Mac when you had the chance. I heard they have so few problems when you call tech support Steve Jobs himself answers the phone.

Nice to hear that Kelly. Over here..I've had one client say he had no problems with Vista which he bought preinstalled on 2 pc's.
OTOH, I've had three technicians tell me they spend all their time removing vista from pc's. Glad it is working for you though.

I've run into a few issues. The biggest having to do with networking computers that have XP.
I can network XP 'puters all day long with no problems at all. But, try to get an XP to read a 'puter with Vista and you might as well be banging your head against a wall. It'll be less painful.

Photoshop 6 runs fine with Vista Chuck, but the gerber upgrade is correct.

Glenn, My 900 megahertz desktop with XP (Trend PC Cillin), as well as my laptop (AVG) are networked with my new Vista machine (Norton). It took a while to work around it but all three communicate fine. At home we have the same setup, the main computer in the house runs Vista and our laptops are both XP. The snag that stumped us for a while was that we had to enable sharing in two different places in each computer. If you are having issues getting them to network I suggest googling for solutions.

We have 4 puters networked -- 2 with vista and 2 with xp. We had 2 networked with a switch -- 1 with vista and 1 with xp so we could use our older graphtec plotter until they resolved the driver for that plotter for vista. Once graphtec updated the plotter we took the xp one offline.
Glenn, maybe you could get with Joe for help on the networking thing.
Vista works great I think, but like always it may take a while to get used to a new op system update. There's always been those who regard new things with suspicion and contempt. For those having issues, you may want to get help from a techy. We're lucky here to have Ben and Joe, and I've always found these younger folk have little fear when it comes to puters.

We finally got the network thing going. I ended up calling my local IP provider and they sent someone over. Even they were having difficulties for a while.
Another issue is installing Photoshop CS3 in Vista. For some reason, it won't install if CS2 had been installed previously. You have to go through a bunch of nonsense cleaning your system of any instances of CS2 before CS3 will install. Supposedly, its an Adobe issue. All I know is that I have no problem running CS2 and CS3 on any of my XP 'puters.
Don't get me wrong. Vista is kinda fun but I do think they could have done a better job particularly with resource management and permissions. But that's just me.
