Sometimes these simple things come back to bite so I figured I'd ask.
I'll be applying a sheet of .040 aluminum (18x 24) to plywood. My plan calls for using silicone to adhere the aluminum to the plywood.
Will this work or should I be using a different adhesive?

Inside or out? Raw or painted ply? I think silicone would work, just gives lots of time to dry. I always scuff the side of the aluminum to be bonded (if it's painted) I'd probably check with Lord or 3M to see if they have an adhesive for those two materials.

Thanks everyone. The plywood is primed and it's not MDO it's contstruction grade plywood. Does that change things?

I don't know about the primer on the plywood changing the adhesive, but the bond between the aluminum and the plywood is only going to be as strong as the bond of the primer to the plywood, and as the primer deteriorates, so will your bond.

Use contact cement only for interior applications.

why not buy it already bonded to the wood.. alumalite has a sample book with the wood backed stuff in there..

F-26 works good as well - have put together a 'coupla wooden boats with that stuff - seriously - built two 6' dinghys using that as well as stainless steel screws in all the joints - boats are now 5 yrs. old - one of em got abused pretty bad by my neighbor (whut a guy, huh?) - the other one is still pretty pristine - brother currently uses the boat for trout fishing on the Little Red River in Arkansas - can only handle a trolling motor - boat only has one minor leak after 5 yrs. . . . . .I trust liquid adhesives - -if you use Liquid Nail git the exterior version - dark brown tube - - -

Why not but this product already built? I would think it would be cleaner and cheaper than doing it yourself. Are you trying to save money?

I'd buy it already built. Once I advised a client to bond the .040-gauge aluminum 4X8 they had just bought from me to plywood with liquid nails for a fascia sign. They brought it back to me in a year, all buckled to hell. Granted I couldn't control the fact that they stuck it to raw ASB, (I'd told them to use primed & painted plywood and a squeegee to even out the liquid nails) but they expected me to fix it. Just buy the stuff. love....jill
