I have a customer that wants to put an 8" reflective stripe down the length of a pickup truck (each side) and an 8" reflective over the hood and roof. These are lease vehicles and they don't want the hassle of taking the glue off after they are ready to turn them in. Has anyone put reflective over Intermediate Vinyl? They have MANY trucks!

Tony: I have not tried this with reflective because of the very AGRESSIVE adhesive. Your idea of putting down intermediate vinyl FIRST would be the way I would choose to do this type of job. That way the intermediate would release from the paint surface taking the reflective with it. I think I would make the customer sign some kind of a release form relieving you of responsibility for paint damage though.

If you are going ot install the reflective over an intermediate film look into Gerber's Image-cal R which is for removable.
I'm not sure on the exact specs Tony but if you call Hyatt's they can fill you in on the Imagecal-R

I think that a better solution would be 3M Scotchlite 680CR Removable Reflective - which I believe was designed for just this type of application.

680CR from 3M cr=controltac removeable Also....680 CR is the only reflective that 3M will guarantee on stainless steel Its a pleasure to work with only drawback ...its very pricey

3M 680CR ... but if its too pricey use intermediate underneath.
Better still "window splash" vinyl. Oracal make one .... 620M Matt Display Vinyl ... low tack, residueless removable. I've had it on windows for over a year and it still comes off in large sheets without heat and no residue.

Define "pricey". If the product saves you time and effort on install and removal (the sum of the two) and if you value your time...it's probably cheap by comparison.

It is the customer who is paying for the material (with a mark-up) so it isn't really pricy to the sign shop.

I didnt imply that I wouldnt use it because I do... I merely was giving Tony all the info I could about the product 680 cr is around $275-300 for 24"x10yds

You might want to look into Nikkalite reflective film. It seems to be backed differently than 3M. It removes just like regular vinyl without leaving that silver mess behind.
If you want to stick with 3M we've done that too. We striped and lettered 4 delivery trucks a few years ago that we knew were going to have to be stripped in two years. Our shop tables are 24' long so we rolled out 24' of 30" vinyl and used Rapid Tac to mount 24" reflective on top. We used oversized vinyl so that any RapidTac that soaked into the paper at the edges wouldn't make the backing paper come apart where the reflective was.
We let it dry overnight, stuck it in the plotter and cut it at the same weight we cut sandblast mask with.
Cut like a charm, weeded with no problems, and more importantly came right off.

I've done it on my shop truck to try it out before attempting on customers vehicle(2 years ago). Works great using 3m intermidiate. Doing up a stainless steel tanker (6000 gallons) on monday using this method. Works great for removal after lease return.
