For the past several weeks I have been negotiating with a couple of companies to manufacture more KillerKarts as many have called and asked about them.

If there are any of you who are interested in one, please contact me either by email or phone. I would also like to know what persons who own one think of which accessory can be added to make them more to your liking. I'm considering making them in a combination of aluminum and steel or just aluminum if I can get the posts in aluminum which are very hard to come by.

Hope this link works for those who don't know what they are. KillerKart

Why not become a Merchant Joey?

Posted by Donna in BC (Member # 130) on :

Yup, mooooove on over to the supplier soapbox unless ya pay up. [Smile]

Killerkarts need to have a larger surface to work on. I find mine too small. For what it's worth.

Posted by Bob Rochon (Member # 30) on :

A larger top would be nice but for portability the size it is, is just fine. Aluminum made would be nice, it could always be lighter.

Posted by Joey Madden (Member # 1192) on :

Yes Mike and PrimaDonna, I have all intentions of becoming a merchant as I was in the past if you recall, that was when I had a product to be sold. This post however is to get a positive response as to what a person wants added to the KillerKart before they are made [Smile]

I think you need to add a paper towel rack and a mirror, also a little slot for change and a hook or clamp to attach a trash bag.

good offer joey,, by the way.. one of the leg segments on my kart is lost from the hurricane.. I would get a new kart.. Or at least a new leg segment.

The size for me is perfect.
A towel holder would be great..
A pair of notches on one edge would be great to hold a trash bag. I cut a pair into mine to hold those plastic bags like walmart gives you to carry out stuff..

I use the clip-on clamps to hold a garbage bag on mine, but I could see a hook for the bag being a nice addition.

As they say, timing is everything, heheh, Jill made me chuckle, solution to all her additions can be handled by using magnets...and next door in another post is very interesting thread on magnets, their sizes, uses, and sources; talk about timing!!!!

I'd like an alumiumn, but totally happy w/mine, though, I'm going to larger, air filled tires...I live in the desert and water is scarce, and EVERYONES going to rock this and rock that, sooooooo, I work around alot of ROCKS... [Wink] [Cool]

We have a feeling there are many of you that have have, or have thought about, developing a product to sell to others in our trade. You know you have to advertise somewhere, but the cost is holding you back. The big fear is "What if I pay to advertise, and my product flops?" Becoming a Merchant is a real bargin at $500 a year, but when you are just starting out, $500 is a big investment.

Letterville needs to generate more income. In order to generate more cash flow, we have to first help others do the same. In a nutshell, we make money by helping others make money. We have the daily traffic all websites dream of generating. The big question is finding the most effective way to put buyers and sellers together.

We are toying with the idea of an online store. People like Joey would be able to offer their products and pay us a commission on what sells. I am amazed that someone has not taken advantage of BB Topics to come up with t-shirts and other stuff that other Letterheads would love to own. The advantage of taking orders in advance prevents you from ending up with a huge stock of designs that may not sell.

There is a downside. You all know that I have had 4 heart attacks and diabetes. Congestive heart failure is our biggest fear. The last thing I need at this point is more work or stress. We don't want to get into the shipping and handling that sometimes goes along with these stores. We'll look after the promotion, but you guys have to do the rest.

So what do you think?

Posted by mike meyer (Member # 542) on :

I think free enterprise is great, and in order to maintain organized rule, there must be ..RULES.
It is not fare to one merchant that pays the fees and another is hocking his wares without paying. If Letterville is a never ending Letterhead Meet, let's try and keep it fair. I have ran a few meets in my day and I have had people want to come and sell their wares without a vendor fee and it is NOT FAIR to the ones that pay. Nothing personal, Joey, i hope you sell a bilion killerkarts, but what if Joe Blow sign painter had a similar "deathkart" and wanted to sell it here without paying as a merchant? Sucks don't it. Sorry about the health problems you have been having Steve, have you thought about trying a ISA show once to reach more Merchants? that's where the bulk of them are, right?

my 2 cents

Posted by jack wills (Member # 521) on :

Hello Steve,

I have been toying with the act of doing
the merchant thing again but.......
with the bargain prices that I have dialed
in to my T-shirt gig it does not match up
to the responses I would need to match a
cost benefit.
Although I would rather sell just one
T-shirt than a gaggle it makes sense to
me to focus where the greater amount of
activity will be.
The Pinstripe shirt is only one of many
styles I will pursue in the future as most
folks needs are what we call selfish art, ie:
cats, dogs, fish, boats, birds, surfing,
flowers and so on.
I started with pinstripes for the love of it
and will continue to add more stuff also.
There is another 15 designs in the oven.
I am only looking for wages and very aware
that the the gold is not in T-shirts.
But....if I come up with a idea that can work
for us I'll join in.

A commission based online store was talked about long ago. Time to put it in effect!

To me, vendors such as Multicam are in a different catagory of a letterhead selling something on the side. I think the commission thing is a neat idea.

Posted by Curtis hammond (Member # 2170) on :

I didn't see a single thing posted when others mentioned something about their new ventures.
A recent example is the flames..

Posted by Steve Shortreed (Member # 436) on :

After reading Jack's response, I have changed my mind about a few things. Talk about a kick in the gonads. The guy posts how he really isn't interested in selling his t-shirts, but goes ahead and drops a link into his new website.

Anyone who has ever done business with friends or relatives often finds themselves in this same spot. These people expect to be treated different because they are pals. Most of us like to help those we consider friends, and continue to fall into the trap again and again.

Hosting Letterhead meets is often the same. There are always "friends" that expect free admission. Some even demand their costs be picked up. It's up to the host to decide what they want to do, but the truth is that it sucks to be put in these situations.

I should have learned this lesson back in 1983 when I quit drinking. 80% of my best friends disappeared overnight. hahahahahahaha What a shock eh? Yet here I am again doing the same thing again and again.

Curtis. There are all sorts of things that go on behind the scenes you guys will never be aware of. Barb and I live a very transparent life here in Letterville. We've attended many, many meets and spent a lot of personal time with you guys. Compare the personal interaction we have with our users to any other website or magazine. We love it, but there are times that familiarity has it's pitfalls. Doing private business with specific, named individuals in a public forum is somewhere I just won't go.

So here's what I am going to do. Everyone gets one free plug. Call it a free sample. After that vendors either play by the rules, or go directly to the Supplier's Soapbox.

We're still here to help out if you need us. Call and we'll work something out. Now I have to go soak my backend. It's a little sore from all the extra use.

I do remember Steve, that I sent many a gift
to the letterhead website in the past. You
did not seem to be bothered by those times.
My apology if I ****ed you or anyone off.
It was not my intention. Please remove the
sticking it to you mention ie: my web add.
You may have misunderstood my words.
It is simply about the math.

I apologize Jack. You were just being a smart businessman. The offending words are gone. This sort of stuff has nothing to do with the reason I started this website. It's time to pass the flame on to someone younger and smarter. We're ready to retire.

Posted by Janette Balogh (Member # 192) on :

oh Puleeeeze! Like we won't notice an "accidental" link dropping. hahhaaaa

Ah ... and gifts with strings attached. Are those REALLY "gifts"? hmmmm ....not in my book.

OK, so if you can't sell a quantity of 30 items here worth 17 each, in one year, then I guess the math in advertising doesn't work out. (especially when you can dodge in quick for free and use past "gifts" as a buffer)

But hey, back to the point. How 'bout that store idea? That might just be the trick for a new smaller venture eh?

Oh Curtis … don’t even get me started! Hahhahaa
The “flames” are an example alright. HAH!

Here’s a guy that contacts the mayor asking permission to mention a new product … with the intentions of becoming a merchant once he makes some headway. He gets his free plug (among many others later)

He goes on to put an oversized COLOUR ad in SC (cha-ching), and then becomes a merchant on another forum. Meanwhile, he boasts on more than one occasion here about his successes, all the while proclaiming his intentions of becoming a Letterville merchant.

That my friends is a PRIME example of how it’s done … and why some new ideas are now being brought to the table here.

Personally, I think Steve and Barb need to pull the reigns abit tighter.

My 2 cents.

Oh Janet..
Yes, I watch.. And know someone was goona take the pipe.. Some of us discussed it before it happened..

But, the whole point.. For example.. A few self appointed will bash someone asking for clip art, The same few will not say any thing when certain others ask for clip art.

Joey started this thread.. A person expressed his valid opinion about this thread and a couple others piled it on. Likewise, if other persons did a thread like this,, nothing would've been said.

Steve does a pretty good job of handling his work he is a hell of a diplomat.

But, when a certain select few pile on and act like the post police,,, that makes his work harder. I see it all the time,, The bad part is,, it gives fundamentalist detractors the ammo to say a double standard exists.. Likewise, we find Steve post on other sites to counter the negative crap. All of which started by the ammo given to those who look for ways to bash steve..

Finally, to anyone who knows the 7 principles of persuasion they will know that..

(1. A free sample (gift) is one of the oldest technique in the book.
(2. A possible client sees others are joining makes him more likely to join.
(3. Remove fear of embarrasment is critical..

are the top three.

Thanks for kind words Janette. You've been a good friend for a longtime and we love ya to bits.

We've been at this game for 10 years now. It's been very satisfying to watch it grow. Thanks to Letterville, we have made close friends all over the World and managed to make a living in the process. No complaints here.

We're often asked what will happen to Letterville after you are gone. My usual response is to shrug it off and pretend I'll be around forever. In truth, I just assumed Barb would carry on, or make her own decision about selling at that point.

Letterville has reached a point where it requires more energy than we can provide. It's time someone else takes over the controls and takes Letterville to the next level.

As for us? I want to go visit our friends downunder, pay off some remaining debt from the sign shop days, attend some Letterhead meets as a civilian and take more time to spend with Family and Friends.

BTW Curtis. Out of respect, I have never posted on other websites. We all have different opinions, but posting in other Forums could be seen as using another's hard work to promote my own venture. I can get in enough trouble right here at home. [Smile]

My main concern at this moment in time is in the manufacturing of a hydroponic system called the Reppertron, a system which grows 200 to 400 plants with a harvest time as little as every 30 days and although I do have a website and 20 or so in stock I choose not to give anyone here a link.

My other concern is re-manufacturing of the killerkart which many Letterheads own including Mike Lavallee, George Perkins, Mister J, Ron Purcell and along with many of those who have answered. I have not yet made more but when I do, I will go through the proper channels.

My apologies to Mike Meyer and to all those who feel offended for whatever they think I've done but remember that I didn't start the fire and the world's been burning since the world's been turning [Smile]

It's a shame, but that's the way it works Joe. You can change things for the better right now! Stand up for a free society! Have Hennie quit work, stop paying your bills and count on your friends and Family to pay your way. Free love too. [Smile]

Do you still believe the stuff we did in the 60's and 70's? Money isn't everything, but it is the exchange for everything. That includes our internet access.

I wish I could draw cartoons. I'm seeing a guy with a ponytail lecturing his kids on the value of playing with their own poop instead of chasing their dreams of real toys.

Now there is a design people might buy!

I love ya to bits OP, but we will never see eye to eye on the free is better stuff. Poor people will never be able to help poor people.

Good to see you CJ. Hope the Family is doing well. Still got that bigass rat snake living in your tree?

Actually Si, the plastic killer milk crate tool carrier was created as a sign kit back in the early days on the west coast and was once made for persons whose personalities matched their work. Other inventions such as the super work cart made from supermarket shopping carts took effect back in the 70's. Throughout my life I've always made it a point to do things differently, simple and effective but that was revised by others who were on a shoestring budget and at this time use the phone book palette, the 6 bottle brush cleaner and how can we all forget the famous soap bar mouse connected to everyone's computer for exceptional design work [Smile]

Maybe the owners of the Killerkarts should have received customer survreys or personal e-mails, or perhaps the title of this post should have read "Attn. Killerkart owners" and us non-owners would have never read into it. But since I did I feel I can give my .02
Part of business as we all know is getting a free plug somewhere, and yes Letterville can feel like a "hometown" so why not, many have done it or tried and will continue I'm sure, but know that the Mayor has spoken like in any hometown, their are policies layed down and I can respect that. Even though it can feel like "our hometown" if Letterville was to aquire some debt or become involved in some liabilties most of us would become invisible. I guess Letterville is like a double-edged sword for me , as I can see no harm with a little plug (I would try it) but on the other hand feel that it is wrong.
Many of us that mix business with creativity maybe jog back and forth across the lines, human nature I think.
I do wish I woulda had one of them karts years ago when I was draggin' TV trays arond vehicles instead.
Hey did I say anything? I am not sure,...I guess I am just thinking aloud (with my keyboard).
Man, some posts really go off on tangents.

Well, this post has pretty well gone to hell, but I think it should still be pointed out that...

When Joey made the original post, he DID NOT say "I'm selling Killerkarts again. Anybody want to buy one?"

He said that he was considering having some more made, and he would like to know if anyone had suggestions for improvements on newer models.

Joey paid for merchant status when he was selling a product, and I believe he will do so again before offering his product for sale again.

All he has done so far, is to offer us the opportunity to have some influence on the design of a product that we may, or may not, buy in the future.

BTW... I like the idea of the add on trays, and maybe they could be stored under the top tray somehow.

Posted by Steve Shortreed (Member # 436) on :

That's true Don. This sort of stuff happens here because of familiarity. We've all known each other long enough here to form strong, but not always accurate, opinions of each others personalities.

We've all known Joey a longtime. The Joey you know may be different than the Joey we know. The same goes for each of us. Depending on where, when and how your experience with Joey happened, you may a whole different take on the Man than I do. Does that make sence?

When I read Joey's post, I had to smile. Over the years, we have spent hours together on the phone. Sometimes we bump heads, but I know there is a good guy under that sometimes rough exterior.

I also know that Joey and I have made a few "behind the scenes" deals. None of know, or should know, the details of of our private business. There is too much discussion of the business end of Letterville on this Forum. It happens because we share too much with you. Too easy to do when your users are also your best friends.

We often hear that all people are not treated equally here. For example. If someone asks about clipart, one of 2 things will happen. They will either get a lecture on the evils of trading copywritten material, or some of us bend over backwards to locate and advice the poster to "look in your mail." Depending on where you sit, it does suggest the "status" of the person making the request is a major factor.

We have to make all sorts of decisions everyday. Barb and I are no different than any of you. We have all sorts of issues and challenges going on in our lives, just like the rest of you. There are many times we disagree on the way we read the same post. There's lots of heated debates on our real life Shortreed Family BB. [Smile]

There are a few things we can do. Resist choosing sides, and getting too personally involved in stuff that upsets you. Leave the day to day business of running the website and sorting out the good and bad guys to us. We always welcome your suggestions and opinions, but let's do it via e-mail or phone.

One last note. We have decided to sell the website and take a rest while there is still time to enjoy it. It will be exciting to see our Letterville dream soar even higher with some fresh, healthy and more wealthy thinking at the helm.

Please!!! Stop the damn fighting!

No idea Mike. There is no real rush. We need to talk to some professionals, determine price and all that other stuff. We'll take things day by day.

I wasn't comfy rereading that quote Mike. The dream I was referring to is Letterville...nothing in our own future.

Jack. I'm not sure how to answer your question. Is there a real question there or just an attempt at sarcasm? That's the problem with text. You might be paying me a compliment and I'm not seeing it.

Truth is I do feel just a bit guilty about all of this. I felt the same way selling off our sign biz back in 1994. After talking with a bunch of people I respect, I now feel comfy with the idea of NOT spending my last day alive at the controls of Letterville. I prefer to be at a meet somewhere painting and flirting.

Joey, can you make it so the whole thing packs as one complete unit, so that the upright piece is somehow a part of the carrying package, and I agree it needs additional shelving, but didnt you offer a 3 shelf model at one time? also maybe the upright piece does attach to the package as you carry it but i never saw it carried that way yet.

PS: did you ever find the one you said you had for me?

Harris, they come w/carrying handle, upright center post bolts to side of lower tray and upper trays fit on center stand, only thing from there I "might" add, would be wheels or roller balls on bottom of tray, so it could be rolled when in a folded, and upright position, but then they destroy one of this karts virtues, it will slide alongside of anything for storage or traveling, wheels would make it an awkward shape to pack easily...or store.

I've done some additions to mine, but kept in mind the need to pack for traveling, it's best to keep sides free of anything that might get broken, cause something to get broken, or ripped, or scratched, or any mirade of things known in some circles as shyte happens, nothing you can do about that except try and head it off with good planning first.....hell, I'm even looking at some way to fold the wheels when traveling to get them out of the way...may have an idea on that, as I've decided to convert to air filled tires, I may just make a lower frame for everything, take the wheels off the lower tray completely and fit it onto new frame, just let gravity hold it there...that way all I have to do is find a way to pack the frame w/wheels, hmmmmm, maybe a trailer hitch, wonder if that would be considered a trailer??? Scotty's doghouse, like in the doghouse now???? mobile beer cooler???? hmmmm, a set of shocks, so weight could be dealt with, it COULD pack paint kit, hmmmmmmmmmmm [Cool]

Joey, "Killer Kart",why don't you just give evrybody a FREE 'Killer Kart", that always seems to work, then everyone will love you & your "Killer Karts". I know I LOVE my "Killer Kart", oops, I think I just endorsed your "Killer Karts"!? I wouldn't change a thing on your "Killer Karts",well, maybe you could add a holder for a couple of "Xcaliber" stripers, a couple of "Art-Kups" & a spot for some "Brush Preservative", on you "Killer Kart"> [Rolling On The Floor]

OK folks, we see it all clearly now.

Joey and Steve had this entire thing planned as a means of announcing the baton being passed.

Clever of you two!

Steve and Barb, your contribution to our industry and bringing personalities into the mix with the art has been tremendous! Thank you for putting up with us for ten years. None of the magazines allow for this level of interaction, so you stepped in to pioneer an entirely new vision and meet a need that hadn't even been defined.
