Hello guys, I do mostly vinyl and digital but i have been called upon to do some Gemini type letters. Just wanted to know do i need to get a permit to install these letters? If so what kind of permit. I live in Southern California will be about 25 letters 18" to 24" tall injection molded

Would Likely be upto your Citys Sign Codes but more then Likely Yes.. I know here it is considered a sign and I do have to pull permits for them.

Carlos, like Bill said, you need to check with your local building department, but being in So Cal, I'm about 99.9% sure you will not only need a permit, but also a contractor's license to do the job.

I would only get one if this was on a very major street. This is where the city people notice signs without permits. I tell the customer that I supply the drawings that are needed and they can get a permit if they want. There is no fine for not getting one around here, so why would anyone in their right mind pay for a permit! You will most liklely never get caught, if you do, you simply pay the fee. (The customer that is) I like to gamble at times! I usually win!

Carlos, I would either get a permit or as stated have the customer pick it up. DO NOT order your letters before getting a permit in hand! I once got stuck while living in Sarasota FL when the zoning people on Longboat Key ( I called it Longnose Key- very snobbish! ) promised me a permit, I ordered and got the letters, and then was told the permit had not been approved after all...I ate the damn letters, fortunately not a big order like yours.

I would say a permit is required as well as a contractors license. On the fines, it depends on the city, your biggest concern is fines for not having a contractors license. Remember, without a license, you can;t pull permits, the customer does not have to pay you and they can ask for thier money they have already paid you. On the permit thing, without a written consent by the client to refuse a permit, you would probably be liable for any work and materials to take the sign down and with no contactors license, they would have to hire and contactor to do it for you.
Once you get into slapping letters on a building, you have to start thinking about how you will go about doing it the right way, or hiring an install comapny to do it for you. There are quite a few in your area you might want to team up with, that way you are covered and still do these types of jobs when they come up.
