Every time I try to open up a file from a large folder, it either locks up my computer, or shuts the program up entirely. It is a new computer with xp media edition, and a new load of "normal" programs. I have split folders up into small folders and this has helped, but it still dumps me in corel paint and photopaint. It was even doing it to my windows photo and fax viewer. I have since loaded infranview and it is now working great. I obviously have something eating at memory, and my tech has not been able to find it. I am using 512ram and doubled it with faster response, but still the same dump problems. Here is the list of programs installed... Corel 9, adobe illust 8, adobe photopaint 7, microsoft publisher 98, quickbooks pro, dreamweaver 4, avg virus scanner, office xp pro, infranview (added after problem), firefox and thunderbird (browser and e-mail client) The computer itself is fairly new with plenty of speed and 160 gig HD. Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

I wonder if your first 512MB of RAM is bad. There are diagnostic programs for checking memory. That's what I would try first.

How many programs open at one time?
160 Gig HD is big, but, with that many proggys loaded how much free space is left?
Last thought--- Are these programs designed for "media edition?"

Something sounds strange Jack. My current laptop has a 3.2 gig Pentium 4 processor and came with 512 ram (I upgraded to 1 gig ram). Media Edition ran CorelCraw 12 just fine, plus the Microsoft office suite and many other lesser programs when it only had 512 ram.
My previous laptop had a 1.2 gig Celeron processor with only 384 meg of ram and it ran all of those programs on XP home edition just fine, only slower response times.
As others have said, it could be anything from bad to incompatible ram to older program conflicts.

A couple of the earlier versions of Draw (maybe ver 9??)did have a problem with "memory leaks" but they were cleared up by downloading and installing the latest service packs. Have you installed the service packs for CorleDraw 9? Just a thought.

With only 512 SdRam which is all I have...
I find that you have to keep your system clean of Temp Files and Cookies and other things that are overloading the memory all the time..
You can work with 2 or 3 programs at onces but close down Internet and the likes of softwares that are not needed at that moment. Do a Disk clean everytime your about to open a new software. Defrag evry night to tighten up memory. Plus realy look and program files and see which ones you really,really, don't need and Delete.

I have been using WinASO to solve a lot of problems that I couldn't find a reason for. There is a trial version that you can download at www.winaso.com.

Thanks for all the responses.... Remember that this is a new load, new hard drive with gobs of space.No temp files. Ram has been changed out to a gig with same results and then we changed back. It is happening in several of the programs. xp service pac 2 is part of media edition. I have thought about the virtual mem thing but haven't tried that yet. The only problem is when I try to open up a file or view a file in a large folder with photos in it down the in folder heiarchy. That doesn't seem like a huge task comparitively. It doesn't even like me looking for the file and dumps me scrolling through the folder for it. No viruses have been introduced and the virus program. We have done a full reformat and reload with same results. These exact programs (all) run fine with ME as a group. I have no slow downs like happens when you are overloading ram. I can take the same folder and move it to my desktop and the problems disappear, but that isn't really a fix, but rather just a hint. I can also drag the files into the programs without problems, but that gets old. I haven't tried importing them. I'm running NTFS filing system, which my tech, says he always uses without these problems. He has checked out all of the hardware for ususal defects. My thought in posting it here, is that you folks use these same kind of programs, and maybe someone has experienced this behavior before. Thanks for anything you have.

it sounds like the behavior I get when browsing a folder I have of data that was lost. partially corrupted & then recovered. It was a lot of data, & some is not corrupt, some is corrupt beyond repair, & some is partially corrupt (opening up with half the data intact. This folder has too many files for me to just work my way through cleaning out the debris... so when I need to look for a file that may have been a part of that crash, I expect to have difficulty browsing, with windows explorer shutting down in mid-browse several times. Sometimes, I can go to the same folder, but hurry to find & copy the file I need & I can succeed... but if I am too slow it crashes. If I try to open from Illustrator... same story, it crashes while browsing from the "open" dialog box.
On a related note... I have dozens of archive CD's with data from back in my windows 98 days. I search through some of these for older files at least every other week on average, & for years I never had any problems. Then one day I started having the same problems occassionally with some of the Cd's or some of the folders. After it happened several times in a month (after years with never seeing this trouble) I noticed a clue. I had just upgraded my Windows XP Pro to service pack 2 right before this happened.. so I still had one machine on W98... & one on XP SP1.. both of these machines gave me more consistent trouble free results.

sounds like a lot of things could be happening and everyone else has touched on some of the issues. Could be virtual memory, could be corruption, and if this machine never functioned properly then you might consider a faulty operating system install by the mfg (it happens).
If this is a new system and you've got backups then try and get the vendor to replace the machine. If not, maybe try a recovery to a point in time where the machine was OK.
Have you checked for viruses, adware, and spyware?

i hope all your programs are not running at startup. is there a music sharing program installed? spyware? service pack 2 installed, my comp did not like that.

Hiya Jack, I'll bet it's a software conflict with some of the media center software and one of your design programs. I'm running a 3.2ghz XP media Center PC with a 200 gig hard drive and I had a similar problem. Somewhere along the way the system craps out for no apparent reason. My fix was to reformat the hard drive and update XP, plus all the embedded software components. Then I deleted the programs that I did not plan to use, restarting the PC after each operation. Once I had everything cleaned up, I began installing any design programs, etc. Since then, I have been trouble free.

Update, I noticed from the beginning that I was not able to disassociate files away from the Adobe program Icon........ even though my Infranview viewer would open and view them Adobe had selfishly keep it's hook in them. (otherwise the icon would change to the regularly associated program's icon like it does normally)...... Thinking that was odd, I removed Photoshop and all problems disappeared... I then reinstalled it after installing the viewer which now has control, and everything works fine. It cleared up the problem with all of the programs. Wow, computers are such nightmares sometimes. This one cost me at least 30 hours. Thanx a lot for the help, and I hope this fix will benefit someone else someday.

I had a similar problem a while back. Adobe files (especially large ones) would conflict with the thumbnail function in XP and cause the system to near lock whenever I opened folders. Very large files sometimes got corrupted (thank goodness for backups).
I removed the association keys in the registry and havent had a problem since.
