One of the two pics below is the first "official" shot of the "NEW SUPERMAN", Brandon Routh...I could get past the fact that he's a dead ringer for Ken Wahl from "Wiseguy", but look at the costume!!
I took the liberty of photoshoping the thing to correct what I saw to be greivous errors...but I bet you can't guess which one the studio is slathering with 200 million BUX though....
yup, you guessed it, the travesty on the left is the final look, as of now. I've been a fan my whole life, and it just makes me sick...I HATE that tiny 'S'(both of them, actually)...and why BURGUNDY?
Am I crazy (wait don't answer that) or is this just total garbage?
Whaddaya think?

I understand where your coming from Barry, but I like the new colors, side by side, the richer colors have a more serious look to them. the old colors in that scene make him look a bit comical.

I'm not a fan of new burnt rusty red and the smaller logo. The red color on the inside of his cape looks more like what the outside should be.

Well, snce we're all Letterheads, you can check out the evolution of the one of the most famous letters around here
I once read an article where John Byrne (I think it was him), the artist on Superman during the 80's, described the two large yellow areas in the design as "the two fish".
There have been a few more radical versions as well, but throughout all the years and changes is the Superman saga, one thing has always been a constant...
The word "Superman" has looked the same on nearly every cover since the first one...over 60 years ago. Rapid
PS: My favorite issue was #400, which featured the work of several great comic artists of the day... Howard Chaykin on the cover, Frank Miller (Daredevil, Electra), Steve Ditko (co-creator of Spiderman), Will Eisner (The Spirit), Mobius (Heavy Metal), Brian Bolland (Judge Dredd)...and a great page written by science fiction author Ray Bradbury.
Posted by Bob Rochon (Member # 30) on :
Yes Superman started out as a comic but in movies he is to be real like his suroundings. If the main character is to look comical then so are his suroundings like the Movie Dick Tracy.
Hey Bruce you got a problem with purple?
Look I was the one of the first to get twisted when they messed with Bugs Bunny, so I understand, but in my eyes its not a bad change for superman.
Posted by Barry Branscum (Member # 445) on :
Well Bob, I was with ya on Bugs...to a point...sorry ya don't agree on Supes..
For me, I think my biggest beef is with the S bein' so piddly, and the repeat on the buckle...it's campy and redundant.

man I'm looking at this on my laptop now and the burgundy seems even darker. Not good at all on this screen.

I dont believe I am Posting this but .... you do know that Supermans Costume is his Black Suit and Glasses....The Blue Lycra is his everyday wear...
Posted by Todd Gill (Member # 2569) on :
My problem is this:
1.) They are making the "Superman" too whimpy (Christopher Reeves and this guy are "fit" but look too lean...kinda like jazzercise queens----they need someone built like Dhalf Lundgren (?sp) was back in that horrible Rocky movie.
Now that dude was built like a superhero.
2.) Reeves and this guy look waaaaay too sensitive for a Superman.....Superman was always the brooding sort....these guys look like they could as easily be 'ping-pong' champions.
Barry - I like the large "S" better....as for the colors? Well, your's is more comic book traditional for sure....

To tone down this conversation a bit, I seem to remember that in one of the movies (I don't know which one) when Superman went evil, his cloak and other red parts turned a shade of burgandy. I think the red is much better and more in keeping with comic colouring. The red is EVIL!!!! Love Barb (Letterheads are my heroes creep creep)

How does Superman shave?
I'll paint a Superman panel to the first Letterhead who knows and posts the answer here. Rapid
Posted by Barry Branscum (Member # 445) on :
According to John Byrne, Supes shaves with his heat vision reflected off a small metal piece from the spaceship that brought him to earth.
So how are you at painting Superman, Rapid?

2 theories Ray.
1. Using metal from his crashed ship 2. Using his heat vision and a mirror
I just Googled it. No panel required. Posted by Doug Allan (Member # 2247) on :
doh! 8:33 & Rapid owes 2 panels! Posted by Ray Rheaume (Member # 3794) on :
Congrats, Barry...you got it perfect.
John Byrne was a huge influence when I was learning to draw and his works on Xmen, Fantastic Four, and Superman were some of my all time favorites. I guess I still have some of his style mixed into mine.
I had a race car cancel for tomorrow, so i guess I'll have a fun day instead. Rapid

Alrighty! THat's cool!
Now here's another one.... I'll do a panel for anyone who can name how many varieties of Kryptonite there were BEFORE the john Byrne revamp (he was a HUGE influence on me too, along with Gary Kawpiz(sp) and Ernie Chan). How many and what were they?...cue the Jeopardy music....
OR name Seven Superman Villians from his "rogues gallery".
That'll bring out the geeks, won't it? Posted by Dave Hunt (Member # 4637) on :
Here's what I've found with a google search.....
Green Kryptonite: weakens and eventually kills super-powered Kryptonians. Usually harmless to other races, but one story in Brave and the Bold had a device used which resulted in Terrans being affected similar to Kryptonians.
Anti-Kryptonite: similar to Green K, but affects non-super-powered Kryptonians. This was a retcon used to explain why the non-powered Argo City residents could be killed by what seemed to be Green K.
X-Kryptonite: Only one chunk, it was created by Supergirl trying to find a cure for Green K. It gives Terrans, or at least Terran cats, Kryptonian style powers for a limited time.
Red Kryptonite: Causes a specific, odd, effect. Often involved physical transformations or mental changes. Each chunk had a different effect, and could only affect a given Kryptonian once. Effects usually wore off in 24-48 hours. Created when Green K passed through a space cloud.
Gold Kryptonite: Removes a Kryptonian's super-powers permanently. Created when Green K passed through a different space cloud.
White Kryptonite: Kills any plant life from any world. Yep, another space cloud.
Blue Kryptonite: Has the same effect on Bizarro Kryptonians as Green K does on real Kryptonians. Created by the same imperfect duplicator ray that created the Bizarros.
Jewel Kryptonite: Remnents of Krypton's Jewel Mountains, it allows Phantom Zone residents to focus their mental energy and cause explosions in the outside world.
Two notable fake varieties are Silver and Yellow K. Silver was used to keep Superman from closely investigating what turned out to be a 25th (silver) anniversary gift for him from his friends, and Yellow was used by Luthor to fake out what he thought was Superman. It turned out it was a Superman robot ordered to react to Kryptonite like the real thing. When Luthor found this out, he returned all the gold from Fort Knox which he'd stolen.

I like the comic book image of SUPERMAN just fine...and the true-life form should match it . . .I believe in consistency in advertising and on-going 'toons'. . .
On the other hand...
we ARE talkin' about a guy who wears tights . . . .

Heres one for you. It was in the comic book many years ago. How is it that Superman is able to keep his identity hidden with just a pair of glasses and a business suit? He does something else to help him change his looks. Posted by Barry Branscum (Member # 445) on :
THAT is a pretty good 'un very obscure and referenced in only one issue that I know of....Maybe you are MY LONG LOST RELATIVE!!
HERE'S YER ANSWER: Super Hypnotism John! Something he did unknowingly....helped along by the kryptonian material used for the lenses of his glasses...he was able to unconciously "hypnotize" anyone who observed him to see him differently, older, poor posture, more slightly built than superman.
Do I get a JOHN DEATON III panel tooo?!?

Posted by Todd Gill (Member # 2569) on :
I gotta say...I love Superman.....BUT....SuperHypnotism is LAME-O!
If he can hypnotize anyone without trying, then he could simply hypnotize all of his arch enemies and not need a single other super-power.
That's b-a-a-a-a-a-d.
Now, lazers emitting from the eyes, x-ray vision? That I can believe in....hehehehehe.
Posted by Barry Branscum (Member # 445) on :
You're right Todd...I guess thats why the powers that be only allowed it to be used for ONE issue...
Unfortunately, stupidity like "Super-Ventriloquism" (I lie not) was allowed to continue during the late sixties and seventies.
THAT is really lame-o.
Posted by Ray Rheaume (Member # 3794) on :
quote: Unfortunately, stupidity like "Super-Ventriloquism" (I lie not) was allowed to continue during the late sixties and seventies.
Blame that one on Batman. Once the campy Batman TV series hit the airwaves, the comics went into the same mode, and somehow the dark and brooding Dark Knight Detective and the Man of Steel looked a lot more like Laurel & Hardy.
Thanks goodness it didn't last... Rapid
PS: Bonus question... Superman's weakness to Kryptonite is well documented, but what's his OTHER weakness?

magic!
Still waiting for someone to name seven superman enemies!

Dang Barry, you know your stuff! It was in one issue. I was a big superman fan back when, and wish I had kept all my issues. Id be rich now. I always wondered how they explained his ability to hide his identity with just glasses and a suit, and it was explained in that issue. Worked for me. Back when Sears sold alot of childrens costumes, my mom bought me a superman suit to wear. Trouble is, I wanted to wear it all the time. Found out pretty soon I couldnt jump outa trees that were too high. The suit did not come with invulnerability. Posted by John Deaton III (Member # 925) on :

how about: Terro-man Black Rock the Parasite Bizarro the Superman Revenge Squad Zod Chemo
I lived in those comics as a kid, man!
Back in the day, I could sniff out a yard sale or flea market with nickel comic books a mile away!
Wasn't it cool when life was so simple that perfect happiness was a rainy day and a six inch stack of tattered comics?
Posted by John Deaton III (Member # 925) on :
You got that right. Comic books are getting harder to find. Used to be large displays of them in alot of stores. Heck, even the book stores only carry a few now. Ive still got some of my old one. My son reads them. In the bathroom. Posted by Barry Branscum (Member # 445) on :
Mine too...I have probably 2500 left from my hey day of probably better than 10,000.
Heck, I still spend 30-40 bucks a month on comics...but then at 3.95 a pop...that doesn't take long
