I had a boat in a marina in Lafite LA in 1987. There was a older yacht that changed hands a few slips down from me. The new owners were a couple of young guys and they renamed the boat "Cum Onboard" and had it lettered. The first time the owner of the marina made his rounds, he saw it and didn't like it at all. Then the complaints started coming in from people that had their boats in the marina. The marina told these guys they would have to remove the offending word in order to keep the boat there. The owners of the boat, being young and dumb, rude and crude, started mouthing off about their right to name the boat what they wanted. They were told to leave and do what they wanted with their rights. They took off in the boat and in a truck looking for a new slip. Word went out very quickly to other marinas about what was headed their way, and these guys were marked men. They spent the next few nights anchored in Bayou St. Denis in some pretty bad weather. Needless to say they had the name changed and managed to find a slip. What make a guy with a boat act so damn stupid?

I'm painting one next week called "HOT RUDDERED BUM"- made me chuckle.
One of the boat owners explained that owning a boat was like having a 32 foot long pit to throw all your money into! He had his named the "MONEY PIT"

there are some interesting boat names on the River Lee here, also obviously owned by men. One is Lady Beaver and the other Wet Dreams.
My boat is called Paddy-Jack after my grandparents, My Nan's nickname was Paddy and my Gramps was called Jack.

I had lettered on for the head of a Chamber of Commerce. I wasn't allowed to tell what it stood for then, but here goes. The boat was simply named "Poets", but it stood for Pi$$ On Everything, Today's Saturday.

I lettered one similar to the "Money Pit" called "Empty Pockets", but the best one was a boat we passed on the interstate titled "Smegma II". I had to ask what that meant -- and when I found out I thought -- YEP!

My favorite boat name that I've painted was a 24' front cockpit skeeter iceboat that would do 80-100 mph. called "ICE SCREAM".
Back in the early 80's I lettered a boat, two sides, while it was tied at the dock. Sitting on the dock, feet in the water. I don't even remember now what it said but I do remember the extremely gorgeous woman who owned it had a 12 volt stainless blender and was giving me strawberry daiquiris, one after the other.. By the time I was done with one side I was too drunk to do the other. When I came back and finished the following day , she asked me how much she owed me. I told her I didn't want any money, just one of those 12 volt blenders. A few day later UPS dropped one off. I still use it on my boat today and every time I have a daiquiri I think of her.

Back in the days of paint before vinyl I got a call to letter a boat in a dealer showroom. Lots of folks like to play off the word "Sea" in their boat name. You'll see examples like Vitamin Sea, Sea U Lator, or Sea-duc-shun. So upon arriving at the boat dealer I ask a salesman what the name was gonna be. He showed me the boat and said the name is going to be called "Sea Envelope". A couple of hours later as I was cleaning my brushes another salesman walks up and asks "Are you finished?" I pointed for him to go look and see. I heard this gosh awful scream and we all came running to the back of the boat. The salesman that screamed was the original saleman that sold the boat. Before leaving for lunch he had left a note on his desk that he hurriedly scribbled that read "See envelope for name on boat". He had the name information in an envelope in a stack of papers on his desk. However, the word "see" was scribbled and looked just like "sea". So the salesman I asked read it and thought "Sea Envelope" was the name of the boat. Needless to say, I had to remove what I had just painted and reletter the correct name. (Which of course, I don't remember.) But I remember "Sea Envelope".
Most everyone I've told this story to said they should have kept it that name.

In our area cottage properties have become so expensive that you have to inherit one. After 10 years of looking for the right lot, we bought a larger boat. Our 27' boat is called "Lake Front Property". And we can afford the taxes on this property!!!

Hi Letterheads, My shop is near the river town of Alton, IL and we have a marina. I have lettered many boats down there. Here are some of my favorite names: Aquadesiac, Jamaica Me Crazy, To the Moon, Maybe Tuesday,Mist-B-Haven,Xkwizit,Daytripper, and AfterMath (for a retired Math teacher). I enjoy boat lettering because it's good money and you don't have to answer the phone for an hour! It's good to get out of the shop now and then and get some fresh air. Have a great week everyone.
