This crude napkin sketch was all I brought back from the Waterfall Lounge after meeting a client about a sign this evening.

I hoped the camera built in to my new phone would come in handy, but on a backlit sign at night, it just registers a blast of light & nothing more.

The "W" seems the most likely clue to a suitable match. The only font of mine I remembered that kind of had a calligraphy look was Zaph Chancery Medium Italic, but it is very different.

Can anyone suggest anything more similar?

EDIT: oops, forgot the image...

Well, not that it much matters, but I did try. The "f" really seems familiar, but nothing I looked at had that "W".

You might have luck with the "search by sight" function at fonts.com. Having not seen the actual letters I wasn't able to supply enough answers to come up with anything close. But, since you have so few letters in your sample, I think it will still be difficult to get descent results with that search tool.

Happy font searching!

I ran just this filled in W through whatthefont.com ...no luck there, but I was then redirected to check "IdentiFont"

After answering a bunch of questions, I was given 30 possibilities. No perfect match, but "Tarragon" was the closest. Pretty far off really... but for the "feel" of it... to the untrained eye of a Korean lounge owner... I'll show this screenshot to my her.

Could it be that the "W" is somewhat customized? Maybe run it through whatthefont.com and identifont without the "W"...perhaps go by the "a", "r", "t", and/or "f". Or could you get a photo in the daytime with a digital camera and just trace it and clean up and not worry about the font?

Doug,

Just be careful when using certain forms of Zapf or similar fonts....

They can give the feeling of a German Bratwurst and Saurkraut restaurant?! Hehehehe....

I actually think the font you came up with and show above might work out for you.....it doesn't have the hard-edged Nazi style change-of-direction strokes as the sample "W" you posted.

Let us know what the customer ends up going with.

Hiya Doug,

What about Seagull? It's just a shot in the dark...

Didn't find the font your looking for but came across this freeware font Web site while looking.

William, it could be customized, but overall the sign looks like a vinyl quicky for a not-too-picky client & I wouldn't think that time would have been spent on that, although the lowercase letters sort of look like they could be a different font from the W to me... also, the scanning photo idea is out, because I'm doing a sign for another lounge... not that one.

ehhh... OK Todd, I watch out for that [Smile]

Brian, Seagull looks good too... I think I might even have that already

Nice site Dave... free is good for jobs like this. I didn't find a match there either but saw a lot of nice stuff.

Doug,
Check out the Knights Templar font at this site.

not bad dave... Insula looks good too... not as close on the W.. but overall it looks less like a scan of a napkin sketch then Knights Templar. I dl'd both of 'em though.

That's as much work as this client deserves [Smile]

I bookmarked your font site too Dave.. seems like a good matching search feature I'll be wanting to try again sometime for sure.

Just focusing on the "W", it may possibly be the lower case "w" from DeVinne Ornamented.
