You got that right Mike. A few years I checked out GEICO and got more insurance with a lower deductible for less that one third my previous cost.

Yeah but have you had to collect from them?

Posted by Mike Lavallee (Member # 320) on :

have any of you had any experience with them?

I have a couple of friends who have auto body repair shops.....they both hate to deal with Geico. A couple of years ago Car & Driver magazine had a story about them, they donate millions of dollars worth of radar detectors to law enforcement...safety right? [Roll Eyes] but according to that story they raise their rates the highest if you are insured by them and get a ticket [Mad]
Here in Lousiana Farm Burea and Progressive have about the best rates/service it seems.

I checked and found out they were a little higher than I'm paying now.

SO gonna stick with State Farm for now.

I checked around a few years ago and found Erie to have good rates & great people in the local office here. I now have auto, homeowners & business policy through them, get a bit of a discount.

We have GEICO...same story....they're rates were nearly half of what we were paying Progressive. The only thing I have had to use from the policy is the Roadside Assistance. 200% better service than AAA.

When I had an old lady pull out in front of me, and her insurance (Nationwide [Mad] ) was dragging it's feet....GEICO offered to go ahead and file the claim to get my ride fixed, then go get the money from them after. Luckily I didn't have to go that route, but I thought it was good of them to offer, even though it would be more paperwork for them. Always got quick straight answers from GEICO....definately can't say the same for Nationwide.

I pay only 1200 a year for both my son (16) and myself for two cars, 50,000/100,000 not the minimum and it surely pays off. It is a local company agent, but I go through a mother co. Just pays off to not have tickets.
Even when someone totaled out my son's car in June, they covered the cost of his car and the medi bills since the ticketed offender didn't have insurance, and lo and behold, the rates didn't go up. I've had them for 3 years, pretty happy. (I don't have full coverage on my vehicles since we drive 90's on purpose so it isn't a great loss if there is damage, we could just buy another one.)
Still, you have to shop around, as his decent grades and my stable record will probably get us more discount yet. I have AAA and good friends in the towing biz if I need assistance. Good luck, as you never know until you shop around.
(now, he's still 16, things may change with his record!).

and... did you know to check with the insurance companies to see if they always use "new" parts to repair? My mechanic tipped me on that one! A lot of the companies allow repair shops to use secondhand parts! better check that out!

I'll second the point that everyone should shop their insurance around at least every 3 years. I had been neglectful, and when I did shop my insurance last week my Independent Agent found a different carrier among the ten he reps who could reduce my premium by 25%.
However AAA could cut my premium 30% and add road service coverage.
It's embarassing to find out that I had been over paying by that much.

Just one acronym is all I need for my insurance:

USAA

If you can get it I beleive it to be the best cost/service ratio there can be.

If you arent happy with your current rates call your current insurance co and ask 'em to lower the rate. It's that simple!

I called my State Farm rep when my usual gal retired and handed the office over to someone else. I told her I've been insured through them over 13 years, have only had one claim and one ticket in that time and that I felt my premium was way out of line. "What can you do for me?"

That phone call is now saving me $60/month.

Has anyone ever checked into insuring your vehicles on your home insurance policies.

I was listening to one of those money saving gurus one night and he said you can save a bundle doing that.

I personally don't know anyone that tried it.

Just a "Heads-Up" Heads:
I did just call Geico.
I only have one vehicle and am paying $1200/year.
BUT
Since it is used commercially and is lettered....
Geico WILL NOT insure it. [Mad]
Guess I'll stick with Erie.
Love....Jill

I live in the politically corrupt, koolaid capital of the USA - Massachusetts. [Roll Eyes]

Geico does not grease the palms of our state officials, so they are not permitted to do business here.

We are not allowed to shop for better auto insurance prices in Massachusetts, because our legislature is so much smarter than we, and they look after us, so that we don't hurt ourselves.

I have had many different auto insurance companies over the years. I have settled on AAA. Like Paul says, cheaper than most, plus roadside assistance. Also, no hassle with claims!

yes...

... here is an AP story from Boston.com that may be of interest before greased-palm theories get out of hand...

quote:
Auto insurers ask for 5.8 percent rate increase
August 13, 2004

BOSTON -- State auto insurers have asked for a 5.8 percent rate increase for next year, citing a slight increase in major policy claims, including bodily injury, property damage, comprehensive and collision.

The average annual insurance rate paid by drivers would jump $62 from $1,082 to $1,144 if the new rate is approved.

The request, filed Friday with state regulators, is relatively modest compared to previous years in part because changes in the average size of claims were mixed, according to Daniel Johnson, president of the Automobile Insurers Bureau of Massachusetts, the industry group making the request.

Johnson said the state's insurance market remains tenuous, noting that just 19 companies offering auto insurance remain in Massachusetts -- the lowest number in the country. The state has been unable to attract new companies because of the state-mandated low rates, he said.

The industry request is the first step in a lengthy process.

Massachusetts is the only state where insurance rates are set by the state. Each year, the industry files recommendations with the state on rates for the following year.

yep. i second that. and try being young.

I'm 22 with NO tickets, accidents, never had one, ever. I dirve a 2002 Blazer and pay 3200.00 a year

i cant get geiko. why? because even though they advertise on all the radio stations and tv, its not offered in NJ!!

Hmmm, could be time to get out the soapbox! But I'll try not to . .
Two things . .
State Mandated Liability Coverage. this has become a windfall for the insurance companies, and in states where financial responsibility is mandated, premiums are out of sight generally. Massachusets, I believe has the mandate law and also regulates (?) premium costs.

Second, it seems that the insurance lobby in those states either owns or pays rent on the state legislatures and the oversight commissions or they don't do business in the states they don't.

A State legislator in my state tried the "Pay At The Pump" deal, and the Insurance Companies had him tarred and feathered! So you can guess how this is gonna go. At the present the insurance companies own most of our lawmakers and I don't see any changes in the near future. If you're a state legislator and campaign on Insurance reform, especially Automobile Liability, Your opponent suddenly comes up with tons of campaign donations . . Now you're back doing your day job, and it ain't legislatin'!

But it's a state by state issue, and even Geico is different in each one, both as premiums and claims adjustment go.

Car insurance (and property taxes) are pretty high in NJ.

New Jersey Manufacturer's Insurance is a good company (good rates, good with claims and cheap by comparison) if you live in NJ. They pay a dividend every year. I think they kick you out pretty fast if you have an accident though.

Thanks,
Steve
