My optical mouse has 'no power'...in other words, the red light is not on in the mouse, and the cursor is froze in the corner. generally unplugging it and plugging back in takes care of it - not this time.
(2) Tried to reboot by pushing the small button with a 'sideways triangle'? (damn glasses!), it does reboot, but only get to the login area...then of course the mouse is not working so can't login!
Tried to shut down, and as far as I know, you just hold the power button for 5 seconds and it SHOULD shut down, it just reboots. How can I force shut down?
(3) I occassionally Zap the P ram to clean things up, by rebooting, holding the Command and option button down along with R and P. The I let it make it's sound 2 to 3 times, release and it does it's thing. But rebooting and holding those buttons down, it does not do it's routine, just cycles on and gets to the login area...
An endless circle. How do I force quit? What's up with the optical mouse? Using OS 9.2. AQnd any ideas on why it just goes round and round?

On the mouse, has it always done this? Have you recently moved it or ran over it with the casters of a chair, Sound like a Hardware problem to me if a physical action is needed to make it work. On reboot, I went from a Tan G3 to a G5..on the G5 you press on the power button. I really see no need to "Zap your P-ram" or restart that many times. You may need to run some diagnostic or Defrag your drive or if you use your computer everyday with a lot of work, maybe time for a system redo. I had my G5 on for 1 months without a restart, My old G3 for almost 2 months. If your computer ran like this before, then it may be time to redo your system.

Rick, thanks for the reply. Still can't get past the login window, but can't login as the mouse has 'no power' as I state it. No red glow. Have unplugged it and no use. Have plugged in my mouse from this Powerbook, also 'no power' or red glow.
Any way to sroll down via keyboard and select the login name for my computer?
Heading home now, and let it sleep...9 times out of 10 it's gone by morn...hope so!

Hey Mike, I've been using Mac's since 1994....this does sound like it might be a hardware problem. If the mouse doesn't light up it is perhaps not receiving power through the keyboard USB or the mouse itself took a dive. You might want to just try to locate a working mouse and keyboard to test it with. I have upgraded to OS 10.3 and to shut down the system you hold down the power button and a window pops up with a highlighted choice to shut down, so you can just hit the return button to shut down. I can't remember the trick for shutting down in OS 9.2, but you might have to be beyond the login sequence for the power down to function properly. If you can get the mouse deal figured out I would suggest an upgrade to OS 10...it kicks ___ on anything that goofy Bill Gates can come up with!!!

Please describe the USB chain if the problem subsist. How are devices daisy-chained, where are hub, the models and brand name.

I had this problem once Mick, on my G3. Shutdown the computer by holding in the power button. Hook back up a conventional mouse so you can work with it. Go to the site of the mouse manufacturer and download the newest drivers. Hopefully that will help. IT did in my case. You might also run conflict catcher if you have it to see if anything is causing a problem. Go to your extensions manager and see if the usb port is turned on, or if you are using a hub, make sure it is working.Thats about all I can think of right now. Hope you get it worked out.
