I work for a large format printer, with two of our printers (an 8' Mimaki and a 16' Scitex XL Jet) run from an Onyx RIP.

The Graphics Department from our other 'division', a commercial 4-color printer, likes to work in InDesign. The RIPs, Onyx 6.0, like either .eps or .tif files, but can't process the .eps files from InDesign. They can if the file is run through Illustrator, and then saved as an Illustrator .eps.

Other than getting the art department to change gears, is there any way to eliminate the extra step?

Indesign is best suited to multi-page text heavy layout, ie. magazine or newspaper layout; why the hell someone would use it for a wide format layout is beyond me...
I guess some people just like using visegrips when they should have a socket.
