Drinking coffee can substantially reduce the risk of developing diabetes, scientists have discovered. A major study involving more than 14,000 people in Finland, which has the highest rate of coffee consumption in the world, has revealed that those who drink most have the lowest incidence of adult-onset or type 2 diabetes.

When people drank three to four cups of coffee a day, their risk of developing diabetes fell by 29 per cent for women and 27 per cent for men. "Coffeeholics" who drank very large amounts of coffee ? ten or more cups a day ? were even less likely to suffer from the disease: such high consumption reduced the risk by 79 per cent for women and 55 per cent for men, inform Timesonline.co.uk

That essential morning coffee, and the lattes that follow, may be just what the doctor ordered: Coffee could help ward off adult onset diabetes, says Finland's National Public Health Institute.
Coffee's apparent protective effect, the mechanism of which remains a mystery, increased with consumption.

Finns average about nine cups daily but Diabetes Australia is reluctant to encourage fanatics to hit the lattes and short blacks. Although there was little evidence to suggest coffee was a major health risk, a good diet and exercise remained the best in the defence against diabetes, said Diabetes Australia's research and development manager, Alan Barclay. "I think it is just too early for us to tell people to start drinking coffee to reduce the risks of developing Type II diabetes," he said.

In January Harvard researchers said a look at 125,000 people found men who drank six cups a day cut their diabetes risk by half over 12 to 18 years, while women who drank that amount had a 30 per cent lowered risk. A recent Dutch study found similar effects, report SMH.com.au

According to Suntimes.com because the Finnish population drinks more coffee per person than any other nation - an average of more than 25 pounds a year, more than twice as much as the American average - "we had the power to determine the risk of diabetes at high levels of consumption," said Dr. Jaakko Tuomilheto, a researcher at the National Public Health Institute of Finland.

A second study reported in the journal by Swedish researchers tried to explain why coffee has a positive effect on diabetes risk, even though caffeine has been found to reduce insulin sensitivity and raise blood sugar.

After taking into account that excessive coffee drinking is associated with other unhealthy behaviors, like being overweight and not getting enough exercise, the researchers still found that drinking more than three cups a day of coffee or tea was linked to improved insulin sensitivity.

That's nice Joe. But where in the report does it mention additives like cream and/or sugar? Or did all those people just drink it black (or whatever color it started as)?

Hey OP,

I skimmed through the post, but didn't notice any warnings about caffeine as it relates to people with heart conditions...

I know you've had a few heart attacks, do you drink decaf or the straight stuff? Seems like the caffeine could cause undue stress on the heart?

And of course you know that a container of Latte has as much as 800 calories in it which could be more then your average breakfast or lunch.

i think they did the study with it being drank black or very little cream..AND NO SUGAR!!!
(DUH SUGAR DIABETIS) i used to drink a cup of coffee with 3 teaspoons of SUGAR!!!!and drink 5-10 cups a day. i had a blood test done then and the doctor said i was "boardeline diabetic", i stopped all the sugar intake then and have never had a problem.
todd, i been drinking coffee since i was a baby, my mother used to give it to me when i was a baby!!!(what was she thinking?) and ive drank it in the mornings as long as i can remember. even when i had the heart attacks, i still had my morning coffee, 2-4 cups and no more. i drink it no sugar, and a touch of half & half, to bring it from a black to a dark beige color. hennie ....prefers a little coffee with her CREAM!!!! she now is using SILK SOY HALF & HALF.

It's not coffee I'm worried about- it's carbonated pop- I read on a website exactly what the acid does to you...WHOAAA! nasty!

a good cup of coffee makes me feel more like excercising then eating... I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Soy silk makes a soy half & half now??? I gotta check that out!

You'd be surprised how good the Silk creamer is! And they have it in hazelnut too.

I have to buy it at the health food store, though.

I heard this "Dr.Perrecone" speak on the effects of coffee and he said some things that are directly the opposite of what those studies show OP.

According to this gentleman, like too much insulin, too much cortisal is the #1 enemy in the body, and is the "death" or aging cell, and is toxic to brain cells.

Some things that cause our bodies to over-produce it are: stress, snack carbs, lack of sleep, and coffee which dramatically raises cortisal levels.

He claims that essential fatty acids (omega-3 primarily found in fish), flax, borage, or extra virgin olive oil, nuts,(like hazel nuts),will actually bring isulin levels down.
He also promotes use of green teas, fruit consumption & exercise.

There's a lot more . . .he talks about DHEA which is a growth hormone found to block cortisal toxins, as well as other natural anti-oxidants, or anti-inflamitorys found in the body which can be boosted thru consuming certain foods and how other foods can defeat you.

When I heard this about a year ago, I totally quit drinkin' coffee as I was a pot-a-mornin', black-coffee drinker everyday.
I drink tea, green tea, or black currant tea, and always unsweet, 'cept when I drink it hot I use honey.
I eat a lotta slalds, fruit and, tuna & salmon... (lol don't croak OP)

My downfall is Mexican restaurants. We have 2 and I would go every single night if my lil' Em' would let me, but she always wants Chinese, lol.

Also, since I been remodeling/destroying my house I have no stove in, just micro-wave. But with the healthier foods that should be no problem, since raw is better anyway.
I could stand to lose about 30 or 40lbs . . . now that I am no longer cookin' all the greasy southern stuff my Daddy wanted...and QUIT eatin' out . . . mabey I'll be able to!! [Roll Eyes]


PS: Steve, I admit to drinkin' a sparkling water flavored beverage once in a while that has 0 sodium, carbs, calories etc., but I totally gave up sodas when I discovered that you can:

*break a raw egg in a "coke" and it will cook it.
*mechanics can drop rusty parts to soak clean in 'coke".
*the fact that the word "acid" is described as a part of this beverage.

A great healthy-eating book is: "FIT FOR LIFE" by Harvey & Marylin Diamond

Acid in soda pop such as coke??? Ever measure how strong your stomach acids are?? A lil carbonic acid from pop is nothing...compared to stomach acid!

I quit paying attention to all those 'fruitcake' "Dr's Studies"! It seems that they all are harbingers of doom ...only because they are looking for grant money to do further studies. A few months later, out comes another one, in just the opposite direction, and later on ....nothing is heard of either study....maybe because they are mostly 'pure bunk' !

Just my very humble opinion!

I'm a juicer and for energy I do alot of ginseng. A wake me up consists of natural sugars such as apples and oranges. Outside of all that crap my vices are extent but my life is that of a free spirit. [Smile]

Omygod, I agree with Sheila!
I switched to tea, brown & green for the benefits.
I take a fish oil (omega 3) a day. DHEA a day.
Quit sugar a most carbs. I lost 15 lbs. in 8 weeks without even trying. A low carb diet is the key.
Come on Sheila, you can do it!

Sheila, you can write a well written post, well done!

I also enjoy the occasional cup of cofeee.

Here's a little sompin sompin I heard of a while back; DDT was outlawed here in the states in the '50s because it never goes away. It gets in the ground and goes up through the roots of plants, and into whatever flowers, fruit or seeds they have. Banned the use of, not the manufacture. Who buys it? South America, for the coffee plantations. Hmmmm...

I know your stomach is strongly acidic, but as far as I was tought the stomach actually only releases acid as it needs it, and the body is prepared for it. ADDING pepsi makes your stomach react by trying to buffer the extra. What this site said is that your body buffers the acid in two ways- water intake (which is you drinking it) or robbing moisture from your body and LEACHING MINERALS FROM YOUR BONES. Minerals help make water more alkaline, hence more buffering power per drop.
The pH of pop is 4 and coffee averages 6.5 or so. that means pop is over 100 times more acidic. Apparently there is so much acidic power in your glass of pop that you have to drink 32 glasses of water to cancel the acid. Those are facts and not a "study". Drop a nail in a can of pop and it dissolves- pointe finale...

I know we tend to debunk "internet sources", but at what point do you suspend your disbelief? I know I could put up a pretty fancy-shmancy website and write stories about how I own a lab that proves that the saliva of the wombat is more potent than viagra, and who's to say what credibility my website has, but I heard on the radio that a guy just got fired from the New York TImes because EVERY story he posted was completely fabricated. whoo'da thunk it? Is "the newspaper" (i.e. EVERY newspaper) any less credible now? No.

In order to level the playing field I feel compelled to point out to you that the word "similar" is not spelled "simular", LOL

Also, you might do a search and find that there are a great many posts that I have replied to quite literately, though I'm afraid you will find scant using of extended "ing's" and possibly an over abundant use of the word "ain't". (Which, by the way, is a word myself and others have rightly caused to be given entry into Webster's dictionarys around the world.)

In your defense, I admit to giving the impression that I must be some truly uneducated, illiterate, off-the-wall individual, or a real live hillbilly . . . lol, when, in fact I can read and write with the best of you.

However, I will in no way make apologies for trying to have fun and playing with my own personal southern accent.
I have many "personalties" and we are all quite well aquainted and get along wonderfully, thank you. Therefore, I reserve the right to choose any personality with which I might respond to any given post.

Robert, thank you for for the kind words of encouragement. Also Mark, "Fit For Life" is one of the best "personal maintenance" books I have ever read as well as the author's second book "Living Health".
I must tell you that I hesitated to even reply to this post to begin with because I feel like a hippocrite in the truest sense of the word, having been one who practiced these maintenance behaviors for years and then backslid. At one time, these things were not merely "health kicks" for me, but personal convictions.
I am ashamed to say that I left the principles of proper nutrition by the wayside long ago, even though I know personally that they work not just for losing weight but for all the dynamics of well being.

I also reserve the right to "use" such posts for my own personal whuppin's and motiva'shuns. [Wink]
